Post Re: [Play by Post] Ch. 1 ... the silence of our friends.
After a tense moment, Stallings dismisses Jackson, Nightingale and Artemis to report to Commander Moss.

The courtyard of the keep is still and empty. The chill of night lingers in the early morning air. Inside the central keep, there's evidence of life returning to normal as the occasional servant passes you in the halls and rooms.

Sir Erik sits behind the commander's desk, going over the night's reports. He looks up when you enter and leaves the papers to approach you.

"Commander Moss has retired for the day. After the events of tonight and the wounds he suffered, he thought it prudent to get a few hours sleep before the rest of the keep's guests woke up. I speak for him until he returns. What do you have to report?"

Jackson gives much the same report to Sir Erik that he did to Janse Stallings.

"It's impressive that you were able to accomplish so much, and gratifying to know that their nearby camp has been disrupted. Hopefully we can have some peace now to take care of our dead." His voice holds a note of true grief for all that was lost tonight.

"Thank you for your services tonight, Jackson, Artemis, Nightingale." He looks each of you in the eye as he expresses his gratitude. "I apologize that I can't offer you more enthusiasm for your heroic deeds, but these last days have required all my efforts and I will have still more to do today. Come this way." He walks across the room and unlocks the door there, leading you inside. Flickering torches reflect from shiny metal scattered around the room. "Please, choose a reward. Anything in this room is yours as our thanks."

[The room contains the following items: a +1 greatsword, a +1 longspear, a scroll of see invisibility, a potion of cure moderate wounds, and a ring of jumping. Each PC can pick one item. Make a note of it and let me know.]

After you've made your selection, Sir Erik escorts you out of the vault, locking the door behind him. He brings you back to his desk and invites you to sit down.

"You say you found a coded note on the assassins and that led you search for their camp. May I see it and the key?" [I'm assuming Jackson has no objections to sharing the note with Erik.]

He works quickly to decode it for himself and sighs. "This does not help me know who did this, or why," he says. "But it makes it clear that there is more to come." His eye are beyond exhaustion. "We cannot be sure if everyone involved in this atrocity is gone, but I can no longer justify a lockdown. In one more day, there will be open fighting throughout the keep. Too much is happening in the world for us to remain locked in this small piece of it. The answers do not lie here anyway. Whoever gave the orders for the killings is gone.

"You are free to leave. I have no power to commmand your next actions. But I urge you to seek those who sent the assassins. Discover what their plans are. If this was only the beginning, I shudder to think of the end. Our hopes for peace are gone, but if we do not stop whoever did this, all our hopes for the future may be destroyed."

He stands and offers Jackson a formal salute, hand to his chest. A nod for Artemis. Nightingale finally charms a smile out of him before he sees you out. The lockdown is lifted. The Elves depart immediately. Other groups are ready to depart two hours later.

[I'm going to break up these last scenes into several posts. In the interest of time, I'm only waiting one night between posts for responses. If you find anything your characters would want to take more time on, or any other NPC's you'd like to speak with before you leave, make a post for it and we'll rubber-band time around to make it all fit in. I'll be lightly roleplaying each of you to keep things moving along.]

After you leave the central keep, Artemis excuses himself. "I have business with the Elves before they leave. I'll find you again, later." And he disappears into the grove, even though it already appears to be empty of most of its previous guests.

Jackson heads for the north side of the keep and Nightingale follows. After a few questions, she discovers he's going to speak with the Dark Horsemen and is eager to meet these legendary mercenaries.

In their tower, Pariah's men are soberly packing their things, getting ready to leave the keep. Only the Sutek and two other men are there. Pariah and the third man are missing. Kss-da returns Jackson's greeting, then gets pulled in by Nightingale's questions and is soon telling her of an epic battle against the Deverenians, when another Horseman starts in about how "you stinkin' lizard, you always get it wrong! Let me tell you how it really went," and Nightingale is pulled into his account of the battle.

Jackson clears his throat, and Kss-da turns back to him.

"Pariah," he says, when Jackson asks to speak with their leader, "died defending thiss keep. The rest of uss have received orderss to return to Kerebruss." He turns away to pull a letter out of his backpack and presents it to Jackson. "He asked for you to carry out the command in thiss letter. The commission will also transfer to you, so you'll earn Pariah'ss reward if you fulfill the contract. You'll need thiss, too." He gives Jackson a ring. [The ring to be described further when I find the full description in the book.]

The Sutek can't answer any questions about the contract he's giving to Jackson, since only Pariah was originally assigned to it. But, after complimenting his choice of weaponry, "More edgess on you than a Markappal spikan'ss got spikess," he assures him that if he completes the mission, the Dark Horsemen will hear of it, one way or another.

The strumming of a harp interrupts the conversation then. Nightingale beautifully performs her rendition of the battle at the assassin's camp. The mercenaries all seem to appreciate her song, save the Sutek whose reptilian features make it hard to interpret his feelings. Then they must finish their preparations for their journey and bid you goodbye.

[If either of you want more than this from this scene, post your actions and we'll play it out to your satisfaction. :) I'll post the final scene at the gate on your way out of the keep tomorrow.]

[Oh, I forgot. hehe.]

When Jackson opens the note, it reads:

"Pariah--

"Cardinal Ulloft of Deverenia will be traveling from Haranshee soon. He is concerned about attacks on his journey and is willing to pay a considerable sum for protection. Get to him as soon as the ceremony is over. The enclosed ring should persuade the Cardinal to trust you.

"--K."

Jackson heads for the gatehouse to finish up any business he has with Janse Stallings before he leaves.

Nightingale returns to the West Thorn to bid her friends there farewell. The Llyrans are assembling outside their tower. Sali, the wizard from last night, is drowsing on her pack in the shade against the tower wall. Jack leans heavily on the wagon and watches the servants load it up with the ambassador's supplies. Son of the Clouds is boisterously directing all the activity. The small bard is welcomed warmly and congratulated on the successful raid of the night before.

"Aye, many thanks to you and Jack and Sali and all th' others who went with you," Son of the Clouds says, pulling her in close under his arm. "And I owe you a personal debt of gratitude. I might not have made it through the night without your warning, lass. I have not much in the way of riches and treasures, but if ever you need help or home you can call on Llyrans for protection and safety. Show this," he gives her a signet ring, "to anyone claiming Llyr as their home and they should lend you as much aid as they can."

He steps back and raises his voice so the rest can hear. "You are, of course, welcome to travel with us." Nods all around and a "Hear, hear!" from Jack at the wagon. "We're on our way to meet with some Dwarves who said they wanted to establish dilpomatic ties with other nations. I could arrange an introduction, if you're interested."

Nightingale is tempted [I'm reasonably sure], and Son of the Clouds assures her that any friend of hers is a friend of his, so she finishes her farewells and goes to find Jackson. At the door of the gatehouse, Artemis appears at her side, sliding sinuously out of the shadows cast by the morning sun. He listens stoically to her cheerful accounts of what he missed [Dark Horsemen and Llyrans]. She evokes a small smile from him when she suggests that, since he is her friend, that makes him Son of the Clouds' friend as well. Together, you find Jackson and the three of you gather your things and take your leave of the keep.

The road out of Ghostwood Keep if busy with traffic as everybody begins their journey home with the news of the assassinations of last night. As the three of you depart, a dozen knights on horseback ride toward you, their Andoveran standards whipping wildly. Sir Erik, himself about to leave, speaks from behind you. "Those are Sir Robert's men, but we did not send word until a short while ago. How could they have heard of the deaths so quickly?"

As the riders draw to a halt a few yards away, their ranks part, allowing a woman in fine white silk to dismount. Sir Erik steps forward, and they briefly exchange words. He bows his head, then beckons you.

"Friends, this is Her Grace the Duchess Cassandra, wife of Sir Robert, Duke of Andover. He..." Erik frowns for a moment, and closes his eyes before continuing. "He is now acting regent after King Michael's passing. The king of Andover -- indeed, many great men and women of the lands -- has been assassinated."

The knowledge that Ghostwood was not an isolated incident shivers through those listening.

Duchess Cassandra speaks now. "Yes, my husband's cousin is gone, and he shall be missed. We cannot, however, afford the luxury of mourning without taking action. Whatever gains Ambassador Caolwader made are lost to us now, and surely High Qureen Tepheroth is rallying her forces to push the attack anew. Andover's remaining forces -- noble heroes such as your Sir Erik -- must prepare to face them. We can spare no one to investigate these attacks, but Sir Erik has recommended you to me. Any assassins that escaped will surely tell their masters of you, and I daren't hope that your actions will not have consequences.

"Please, friends,... in the hour of Andover's need, I beg you to find the men who committed these atrocities."

[Now it's up to you guys to resond and decide where you'd like to go from here. See OOC thread for discussion of possible IM session.]

[This is the end of Chapter 1. I still have two players who are interested in continuing, and I'm game, so (except for tieing up loose ends and responding to this last bit of dialogue) our story will continue in a new thread: Chapter 2. Anybody who wants to create a character and join our game is welcome to! Just contact me in the OOC thread.]

<When Sir Erik offers anything in the room as a reward>

Nightingale walks about the room slowly, looking at every object with curiosity and fascination. She admires the craftsmanship of the weapons, the ornate bottle of the potion, and the simple shininess of the ring. The roll of parchment, though, she doesn't pay much attention to once she discovers there are no stories written upon it. After a short time, she returns to stand in front of Sir Erik.

"I've chosen!" she proclaims with a smile, and offers her hand for shake.

His shake with a hand so small is only a little awkward. "What have you chosen?" He asks, since she didn't actually take anything.

Nightingale grins. "Why, your friendship, of course! I can have it, right? You did shake my hand."

Sir Erik chuckles nervously and clears his throat. "Y-yes. you have my friendship, Nightingale." He's smiling as Jackson approaches, the new greatsword in his hands.

"An excellent choice. May it serve you well, sir." Erik tells him, and leads them out of the vault.
